Ashburton Art Gallery Volunteers WINNERS of the Trustpower Art and Culture Community Award
On the 7th June 2016 Jenny Gill and I attended the Trustpower Community Awards evening at the Ashburton Hotel, where the Ashburton Art Gallery volunteers won the Art and Culture section for our region. In conjunction with the Ashburton District Council these awards are judged on applications from different volunteer organisations and their projects. The applications on completed projects are as diverse as a new swimming pool for a country school to an initiative to start up a vegetable seedling business to help those in need. The awards acknowledge the huge effort volunteers make to their community.
The application submitted by me on behalf of the Ashburton Art Gallery volunteers was a three page document highlighting the eight year undertaking to relocate the Gallery to its new premises. Below is a summarised paragraph from the application.
The effort over the past eight years to complete the process of relocating, in conjunction with the normal day to day commitments of the volunteers at the Gallery has been a major undertaking of extra time, effort and financial support from the committee.
The dedication of the volunteers to the Art Gallery, and to the staff that work there, to support the exhibiting of art in all its forms, art that can be viewed, challenged, experienced, and enjoyed by all in our community (and beyond) and the introduction of art to our young viewers is the passion which drives the team to achieve.
Volunteers are and always will be a valuable and integral asset of the Ashburton Art Gallery
It was my privilege to accept this award on your behalf.
