Bridgit Anderson
Caring for the Dead
A Photographic Essay on the Funeral Profession
26th April-25th May 2008
Opening & Artist's Talk Saturday 26th April 1.30pm

Over the course of a year, Christchurch based photographer Bridget Anderson worked closely with staff in the funeral profession, as well as with the deceased and their families, to produce a series of photographs. The works capture the care and attention afforded the deceased as the body makes its transition from the realms of the living to the realms of the dead. Toured by the Centre of Contemporary Art.

Joanne Woolley
Vanishing Ice
17th May-15th June 2008

Deploying animated and moving images of disintegrating polar ice and the rapidly retreating Dart Glacier in Mount Aspiring National Park, Woolley's exhibition, Vanishing Ice seeks to highlight the much wider ecological debate on global warming. This new-media exhibition has emerged out of her experiences tramping and climbing in the Southern Alps of New Zealand. What has come to fill Woolley's field of vision is not the landscape but the mountain of evidence which now exists to strongly indicate that we are in a serious ecological predicament. By utilising large wall projections, visceral sound and a life-size "hut", Woolley's new-media installation artwork presents an immersive experience for the viewer.

Landworks
31st May-15th June 2008
Opening & Artist's Talk Saturday 31st May 1.30pm

"I am becoming more and more aware of feeling a sense of awe when I stand before the New Zealand landscape. Having grown up here and commanded to look at the mountains as we made our early starts for the ski-field for a day of skiing and married to a bush and mountain loving man you cannot escape ones environment. So as an urban, cappuccino, café culture and clothes loving individual I am able to appreciate the sublime qualities of the great outdoors. Latterly I've turned my attention to using acrylic paint with clear acrylic gel and broad brushes. Rather than throwing the old tools away I found that they were very effective at pushing the paint around and they had their own very unique texture and quality."

Junk to Funk Art Awards 2008 In Association with Wastebusters
19th July-17th August 2008
Entries close Friday June 20th 2008

"I could see no reason why used tram tickets, bit of driftwood, buttons and old junk from attics and rubbish heaps should not serve well as materials for paintings; they suited the purpose just as well as factory-made paints. It is possible to cry out using bits of old rubbish, and that's what I did, gluing and nailing them together." Kurt Schwitters

Entries must explore the notion of junk to funk either conceptually or aesthetically. Participants are required to submit a statement on how and why recycled materials have been utilised within the work. The First Prize is $3,000. Entry forms are available from the Ashburton Art Gallery. Entries close 20th June 2008.
