The Process of Place
ABOUT THIS EXHIBITION
DATES & TIMES
19 November 2018- 17 February 2019
Open Daily: 10am - 4pm
The sites of forest remnants and bush on Waiheke Island have been captured in great detail through the drawings of Clive Humphreys in this exhibition.
Humphreys cannot be faulted on his technical skill in capturing his surroundings, with this exhibition a direct reflection of years spent studying and learning from the British watercolourists. In his own works he utilises the same traditional techniques that were deployed in the 18th and 19th Centuries, but in newly refined ways. He says:
These drawings do not seek to generalise, catastrophise or romanticise place but rather, through a focus on particularity and uniqueness, to connect place to drawer and viewer through tactile identification. Through drawing it is possible to reach out and touch, to feel the weight and texture of place.
Clive Humphreys is currently the Acting Head of School, and Principal Lecturer at the Dunedin School of Art. He has exhibited regularly in New Zealand since 1992 and has been a finalist in the Wallace Awards on numerous occasions.
