Celebrating Fibrecrafts
ABOUT THIS EXHIBITION
DATES & TIMES
13 August - 27 September 2020
Open Daily: 10am - 4pm
To celebrate the Golden Anniversary of the Ashburton Creative Fibre Group, Celebrating Fibrecrafts is a showcase of both natural fibre and the creativity and skills of the local members who use it.
This exhibition will feature handcrafted garments and articles, all created from natural fibre. Visitors will also gain insight into processes and fibre preparation, as well as various fibrecraft techniques.
The Ashburton Creative Fibre Group (formerly Ashburton Spinners and Weavers) was formed in July 1970 and currently has around 50 members. These members are skilled in a range of fibre-related techniques, such as spinning, dyeing, weaving, needle crafts and felting, and actively encourage the use of traditional skills.
Highlights of the exhibition include a hand-knitted and crocheted bridal gown in silk and freshwater pearls, a replica of the Christchurch Cathedral and a mid-Canterbury diorama made by all the members of the group.
Workshops and demonstrations of these skills will run in conjunction with the exhibition. Please visit our website or Facebook page for more information.
