DATES & TIMES

20 February - 26 March 2021

Open Daily: 10am - 4pm

Porosities is a solo exhibition by Christchurch-based artist Ina Johann comprising drawing, painting and photography in Johann’s distinctive style.

Johann has a strong drawing practice – a form of personal mapping and navigation of constantly shifting territories. She uses a range of media in her practice: drawing and photography, digital manipulations and collage, moving image, and light to create multi-dimensional installations. Drawing acts as a form of personal navigation to survey, observe, fragment, un-peel and re-construct layers of meaning in search for a new physicality and reality.

Johann’s work reflects upon re-collection and memory, personal loss, coding and de-coding. Art for her is the space between things, where one is striving to make sense of an ostensibly chaotic world. Johann’s research has been predominantly centered on the perception of place and the notion of home and belonging. This personal drive stems from a sense of displacement and the desire to explore the tensions and contradictions that exist in the life of many immigrant people.

Porosities investigates the empty spaces between the spaces that we inhabit, particularly with regard to post-earthquake Christchurch. It considers the green spaces that have risen from residential areas, as well as other changes the city has experienced.
