ABOUT THIS EXHIBITION
DATES & TIMES
04 July 2026 - 30 August 2026
Open Daily: 10am - 4pm
Potion by Anita DeSoto, is a vibrant homage to the Baroque era, reimagined through the lens of contemporary gender discourse. Her large-scale paintings burst with movement and colour, featuring elaborate scenes filled with flowers, fruit, and groups of women, echoing the mythological narratives of Baroque art. By drawing inspiration from the opulent style of Baroque masters, DeSoto critiques the traditional gender roles depicted in historical European art, offering a fresh perspective on the struggles women have faced throughout history.
In a time when women’s rights are still at risk, DeSoto’s works serves as a powerful reminder of the persecution women endured during witch hunts and the ongoing need to address these historical injustices. Through her art, she invites viewers to reflect on past and present gender portrayals and consider their implications.
Based in Waitati, Dunedin, DeSoto has been a prominent figure in New Zealand art for over 20 years. Her impressive career includes a Master of Fine Arts and extensive teaching experience at the Dunedin School of Art. She has received numerous residencies and her works are held in several notable collections across New Zealand.
