Artist Chat – Hannah Kidd
Hannah Kidd is a contemporary New Zealand artist based in Methven, an alpine village situated at the feet of Mt Hutt. Although predominantly working in the medium of sculpture, Hannah is a phenomenal maker of other beautiful treasures.
At Ashburton Art Gallery, we are fortunate to stock some of Hannah’s wonders in the gift shop. Hannah’s bags are fun, woven treasures that repurpose found tapestries. Over the past ten years, Hannah has meticulously collected tapestries from second hand stores. In her home studio, Hannah gives the tapestries a second purpose as a bag. The tapestries Hannah selects are quintessentially English, with scenes of horse-drawn sleighs, ribbon-bedecked ladies, and rolling green-gold landscapes.

We are fortunate to have peered into Hannah’s home studio and been given some insight into how she is spending her lockdown. Making sushi has proved to be a fun, hands-on practical exercise for Hannah and her family. Hannah has continued to work on current ceramic projects, which has been a familiar, grounding task. In the image below, you can see the detail Hannah’s work captures – the fawn she is painting is immensely life like.
