Artist Chat – Samantha Elise
Samantha Elise is a Christchurch-based ceramic jeweller. Her handmade, functional, wearable ceramic jewellery is as playful as it is enticing. Taking direct inspiration from nature, Samantha’s jewellery takes the forms of flora and fauna, or is textured to mimic bark. Some of Samantha’s pieces are available to purchase at the Ashburton Art Gallery gift shop, and are much enjoyed by the Gallery staff.
We reached out to Samantha to see how she has spent her lockdown in her home studio.

It appears to have been a very busy period as Samantha’s home doubles as her studio, making for quite a productive lockdown. Samantha has been busy on the wheel throwing pots and bud vases, playing with new shapes and textures, and completing product orders. Test tiles have been used to experiment with new glaze recipes. One of the test tiles is pictured below – the warm, blushing russet tone certainly has our seal of approval for a successful colour test! When working with ceramics, it is always a little bit of a surprise to see the final product, and Samantha and can’t wait to take her recent projects out of the kiln.
We highly recommend perusing Samantha Elise’s Instagram (@samanthaelisestudio) as it is a catalogue of pastel wonders sure to brighten your day.
If you would like to purchase anything from the Gallery shop, please send us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org, and we will be in touch as soon as we have access to our store once more.
