Artist Chat – Sanae Hydes
During the lockdown period, the Gallery team have been reaching out to artists, both those currently exhibiting at the Gallery, and local makers who supply the Gallery Shop with lovely creative wares.
Sanae is a local ceramic artist, and is very involved with the community-run, Ashburton-based Hakatere Ceramics & Pottery Club. She supplies the Gallery with delightful ceramic flowers. These works are lovely pops of colour – they are wonderful additions to one’s hallway wall or the garden.
The lockdown has been busy for Sanae and her husband Mick, first with the project of rearranging their pottery shed, and secondly enjoying the time spent making ceramic wares. They both relish in their daily walk around the neighbourhood, especially with the glorious sunshine Ashburton has been treated to this week.
Sanae’s creativity extends to the kitchen. She has baked seed biscuits, sticky date cakes, station brownie, and apple slices. The loaf of bread Sanae made was quite a giant, standing at 27cm tall!

Currently, Sanae is in the process of making ceramic flowers and other items. The flowers in the basket (pictured below) are fresh from the kiln, having finished the bisc firing, which is the first of the two firing processes. Sanae’s next project will be to glaze the flowers and fire the works a second time.

We look forward to stocking more of Sanae’s lovely creations at the Gallery shop, although we do miss the ceramic flowers when they find a new home.
If you would like to purchase anything from the Gallery shop, please send us an email at shop@ashburtonartgallery.org.nz, and we will be in touch as soon as we have access to our store once more.
