ABOUT THIS EXHIBITION
DATES & TIMES
2 AUGUST — 26 SEPTEMBER 2021
Open Daily: 10am - 4pm
Gaylene Barnes is a farmer and a filmmaker. In her solo exhibition Duration, she pairs these backgrounds to observe the natural world. On the Canterbury Plains, from Heathcote to Highbank she attends to how creatures, insects and birds live out their day, in the wilds and on the farms.
The non-narrative, contemplative style of these filmed observations follow the natural world of the animal without injecting a perspective, nor imposing a story. Rather, Duration is a celebration and examination of Canterbury’s biodiversity. The exhibition is an account of the worldly, sensory, all-encompassing framework in which we are all connected.
Duration is presented as a circle of 48” video screen recordings of the direct experience with the animal, accompanied by a series of reflective pen and ink drawings.
