Opening Day – a few words by Hon Jo Goodhew

May 23, 2015

Good afternoon everyone. Can I begin by thanking the Art Gallery committee for their kind invitation to be part of this afternoon’s opening of your wonderful new Ashburton Art Gallery?

I would like to acknowledge Mayor Angus McKay, gallery patron Richard Conway, gallery chairman Bernie Davidson, gallery director Shirin Khosraviani, special guests, artists, friends and supporters. I’m also delighted to acknowledge my friend Joan Wilkinson, the gallery’s longest serving committee member and one of the official ribbon cutters today.

I’m so pleased for the gallery committee, staff and volunteers that this day has come. I think we all know it’s been a longer path getting here than originally expected, but it has come and I just know it will have been worth the wait.

That the gallery is now exhibition-ready is due in no small part I’m sure to many hours of effort by not just the gallery staff, but also the gallery’s friends and volunteers.

As Minister for the Community and Voluntary Sector, I am constantly in awe of the commitment and passion of volunteers in our communities.

In fact in New Zealand each year over one million volunteers contribute around 270 million hours of their time. It is a stunning statistic and one that proves communities such as this would be considerably poorer in a countless number of ways without the dedication of volunteers.

I am looking forward to walking through the gallery this afternoon and seeing how it showcases your wonderful collection and the various exhibitions you have now, and will host, in the future.

Earlier in the year my Ministerial colleague, the Hon Chris Finlayson, opened this building and was very impressed with the potential for your gallery.

He had also visited last year when the build was still in progress but what he saw of this facility even then resulted in his signing off a $1.1 million grant from the regional museums fund, signifying the importance of this facility to the wider Canterbury region.

This gallery, along with the museum, family history room and research facilities downstairs, will be the hub for culture, art and heritage for decades to come in this district. The district will be a richer place for it.

I wish you well as you celebrate this opening and begin your journey in the new Ashburton Art Gallery.
