Bladwin’s winning work was one of 37 created by artists (24 for the Premier Award, and 13 for the Young Generation Award) which were presented in the ZAFAA exhibition which opened on Friday March 18 alongside ZAFAA21 Premier Winner Jacquelyn Greenbank’s solo exhibition, Pork Chop Express. Greenbank’s solo exhibition is a continuation of her artistic questioning and exploration of cultural identifiers.

The three judges, Julia Morison, Imogen Stockwell, and Hannah Joynt noted the great challenge in selecting this years winners, and were greatly impressed at the caliber of work exhibited in ZAFAA 2022.

Along with a cash prize of $3,500, Baldwin has also won the invaluable opportunity to create a solo exhibition, which will be exhibited at the Ashburton Art Gallery in 2023.  The judges noted this opportunity in their decision, stating that Art Chemist challenged the boundaries and one’s perception of contemporary art.

The ZAFAA22 Young Generation Award went to Vivien Silver-Hessey and her entry My Feet Are Killing Me.  The judges were impressed by the social awareness the artwork demonstrates and utilisation of various artistic medias. Morison, Stockwell, and Joynt shared their excitement at seeing see where Silver-Hessey’s art practice takes her in the coming years.
